Ninh Binh is one of the easiest places in northern Vietnam to organize yourself: two hours from Hanoi, everything within a short ride, no tour required. This covers getting there, boat tickets, transport, timing and what it all costs.
Ninh Binh is the easiest major sight in northern Vietnam to organize without a tour. It is about 95km (roughly 60 miles) south of Hanoi, the road is good, the attractions sit within about ten kilometers (six miles) of one another, and boat tickets are sold at the pier. The only real difficulty is that the area is popular with domestic travelers too, so going at the wrong hour turns a beautiful morning into a queue. Where it is and what is actually there
The heart of it is the Trang An landscape complex, a spread of limestone towers, flooded caves and rice valleys that UNESCO listed in 2014 for both its natural and cultural value. Around it are Tam Coc, the viewpoint at Hang Mua, the tenth-century capital at Hoa Lu, the pagoda complex at Bai Dinh, and quieter spots such as Thung Nham and Van Long. Administratively it is in Ninh Binh province, which absorbed the former Ha Nam and Nam Dinh provinces in Vietnam's 2025 provincial mergers. Nothing has moved; the familiar names of Hoa Lu, Tam Coc and Gia Vien are still used.
Getting there from Hanoi
- Limousine minibus: about two hours, door to door, roughly 150,000-300,000d (US$6-12) one way as an estimate
- Standard intercity bus: cheaper again, from around 90,000-150,000d (US$4-6), but you use bus stations at both ends
- Train to Ninh Binh station: around two to two and a half hours, scenic and unhurried, and the station is central
- Private car with driver: the most flexible option if you want to stop along the way or you are a family
- Self-driving a scooter from Hanoi is possible but the highway carries heavy truck traffic, so most visitors should not
Arriving from overseas
International flights land at Noi Bai airport, which serves Hanoi and sits north of the city, around 45 minutes to an hour from the old quarter depending on traffic. A metered taxi or a car booked through Grab, the ride-hailing app used across Southeast Asia, costs roughly 300,000-500,000d (about US$12-20) as an estimate. Some visitors go straight from the airport to Ninh Binh by private transfer, around two and a half hours, which is worth considering if you land in the morning and want to start in the countryside rather than in city traffic. Vietnam runs an online e-visa covering most nationalities; apply on the official government portal and check current requirements for your passport before you fly.
Getting around once you are here
Distances between sights are short, so a scooter is the most practical way to move around, hired for roughly 120,000-200,000d (about US$5-8) a day as an estimate, usually excluding fuel. Many places to stay rent them, so ask when you book. If nobody in your group rides confidently, hire a car with a driver by the day instead, which is the sensible choice with young children or older parents. Bicycles work well for short loops around Tam Coc, where the lanes run between paddy fields. Grab is available but thin outside the town itself, so do not rely on it at a rural pier.
Tickets and the three boat routes
Entry to the Trang An complex, which includes your seat in a rowed boat, is around 200,000-300,000d (roughly US$8-12) per person as an estimate. You choose your route when you buy the ticket and cannot change it once you are on the water. Route 1 passes through the most caves and calls at several small temples, and it is the usual choice for a first visit. Route 2 is shorter and quieter. Route 3 takes in the rebuilt Kong: Skull Island film set and includes a walking section, which helps if sitting still for three hours does not appeal. Each route runs roughly two and a half to three and a half hours. Boats carry four or five passengers, and tipping the person rowing, around 30,000-50,000d (US$1-2), is normal.
When to go and how long to stay
- Late May to early June: the Tam Coc rice harvest, the best scenery and the biggest crowds
- September to November: dry, mild and the most comfortable time to sit in a boat
- January to March: pilgrimage and festival season, green countryside, very busy temples
- June to August: hot enough that outdoor time should be before 9am or after 3pm
- Two days and one night suits most people; three if you want Cuc Phuong, Van Long or Thung Nham

If you take one thing from this guide, take this: be on a boat before eight in the morning. The water is still flat, the caves are empty, nobody is queuing at the pier and the sun is not yet on you. The same route at half past seven and at ten is two entirely different experiences.
Mistakes people make here
- Booking two boat routes into one day and spending five hours sitting still under the sun
- Turning up at the pier at midday, which combines the worst heat with the longest wait
- Arriving with no small notes for tipping the rower, which is expected practice
- Leaving accommodation until the last minute during harvest season, when the Tam Coc area fills up
- Wearing shorts and bare shoulders to the temples on the boat routes
- Forgetting a hat and sunscreen for several hours in an open boat with no cover
