Moc Chau is a plateau at around 1,000 metres in Son La province, five or six hours west of Hanoi, and it looks unlike anywhere else in the country. Instead of rice terraces it has tea — hectares of clipped green rows contoured across low hills — along with dairy pasture, plum and peach orchards, and enough cool, even climate to grow all three commercially.
The plateau has two peak seasons and they are both about flowers. In late January and February the plum orchards blossom white across whole hillsides, followed by peach in pink; in October and November the wild sunflowers and mustard flowers come out along the roadsides. Between those windows the tea hills carry the visit on their own, particularly the spiral-planted hill that has become the plateau's signature image.
Moc Chau is less about sights than about driving and stopping. Pha Luong, on the Laos border, is a demanding half-day walk to a cliff edge with an enormous view. Dai Yem waterfall drops in tiers beside the main road. Hmong and Thai villages sit off the highway at intervals, and the local dairy industry means the plateau is the one place in Vietnam where fresh milk and yoghurt are a genuine speciality. It works as a two-night trip from Hanoi or as a stop on the long road towards Dien Bien Phu.

Weather
The plateau is cool year-round, typically 5-10°C below Hanoi, and cold in winter mornings. Late January and February bring plum blossom; October and November are dry, clear and full of wild flowers. Summer is warm and very wet, with the Pha Luong trail often closed by mud.

Hundreds of hectares of commercial tea planted in contour rows across low hills, including the spiral-planted hill that has become the plateau's most photographed spot. Picking happens through much of the year and the estates are open to walk through.
A waterfall dropping in two main tiers over a wide limestone shelf a short distance off the main highway, with walkways and a suspension bridge across the pool below. Strongest between June and September and much reduced by late winter.
The orchard valley at Na Ka, planted almost entirely with plum, which blossoms white across the whole basin in late January and February and fruits in late May and June. Local families open the orchards to visitors in both seasons.
A flat-topped mountain on the border with Laos, reached by a rough track and then a steep climb to a cliff edge that drops away hundreds of metres, with the Lao ranges beyond. The most demanding thing to do on the plateau and the most rewarding.
