A nature reserve of terraced valleys, bamboo waterwheels and Thai stilt villages — the quiet version of Sapa, four hours from Hanoi.
Pu Luong Nature Reserve covers about 17,600 hectares of limestone ridge and river valley in northern Thanh Hoa province, and for a long time almost nobody outside Vietnam had heard of it. It has the terraces, the stilt houses and the mountain air that draw people to Sapa, without the town, the cable car or the crowds. What it has instead are enormous bamboo waterwheels, still lifting river water into the irrigation channels that feed the paddies below.
The reserve is Thai and Muong country, and the standard trip is a two- or three-night stay in a valley lodge or homestay with day walks between villages: Kho Muong in its hidden basin, Hieu with its stepped waterfall, Don and Ban Hang along the terraced slopes. Distances are short, the walking is gentle to moderate, and nothing about it is organised as a spectacle. Evenings are dinner with the family, and then silence.
Because it is only about four hours from Hanoi by road, Pu Luong slots naturally into a northern loop as the two nights between Ninh Binh and Mai Chau. It is at its best in two windows: late May to June, when the terraces are flooded and mirror-flat, and September to October, when the same fields turn gold before the harvest.

Late May and June flood the terraces; September and October ripen them. Both windows are warm, in the mid-20s to low 30s Celsius, with cool nights at altitude. Winter is cool and misty with bare fields. Heavy summer rain can make the valley tracks difficult and brings leeches into the forest sections.

About 17,600 hectares of limestone ridge, forest and terraced valley between two parallel mountain ranges, protecting one of the largest remaining lowland limestone forests in northern Vietnam along with several threatened primate species.
A Thai village of a few dozen households in a closed basin reached by a steep track down from the ridge road, with a large bat cave in the hillside above and terraces filling the valley floor. One of the quietest inhabited places in the reserve.
A waterfall that drops through the middle of Hieu village in a series of stepped pools, several of them deep enough to swim in. The path up alongside it passes through gardens and stilt houses to the top of the cascade.
The best-known terraced slopes in the reserve, wrapping around the hillside above Don village with bamboo waterwheels along the river below. The lodges clustered here have the wide valley view that appears in most photographs of Pu Luong.
