Hue Imperial Citadel
A moated, walled complex on the north bank of the Perfume River containing the Imperial City and, within it, the Forbidden Purple City reserved for the emperor. Built from 1804, largely destroyed in 1968, and under continuous restoration since the UNESCO listing in 1993.

Hue Imperial Citadel is one of the places most visitors to Hue make time for. Vietnam's imperial capital from 1802 to 1945, with a walled citadel, seven royal tombs along the river and the country's most distinctive regional cooking.
Before you go: The site is very large and almost unshaded — go at opening. A combination ticket covering the citadel and three tombs is much better value than separate entries.
