A working monastery on a bluff above the Perfume River, founded in 1601 and fronted by a seven-storey octagonal tower that has become the symbol of the city. The car in which the monk Thich Quang Duc travelled to Saigon in 1963 is kept in the grounds.

Thien Mu Pagoda is one of the places most visitors to Hue make time for. Vietnam's imperial capital from 1802 to 1945, with a walled citadel, seven royal tombs along the river and the country's most distinctive regional cooking.
Before you go: Reachable by dragon boat from the city in about half an hour, which is a far better approach than by road. It remains an active monastery — keep noise down and dress modestly.
