Ha Long Bay is the sight most people book Vietnam for, and the one most easily got wrong. The bay holds roughly 1,600 limestone islands and islets across 1,500 square kilometres of the Gulf of Tonkin, inscribed by UNESCO in 1994 and extended in 2000. Seen from the deck of a boat on a still morning, with the towers fading into haze in every direction, it earns every word written about it.
The way to get that experience is an overnight cruise rather than a day trip. Day boats leave and return within the same six hours, which means they all sail the same short circuit through the busiest water at the busiest time. An overnight boat pushes further out, anchors in a quiet bay, and gives you the two hours that matter — sunset and sunrise, when the day fleet has gone home.
The bay is also not the only option. Bai Tu Long, immediately to the north-east, is the same geology with a fraction of the traffic. Lan Ha Bay, to the south around Cat Ba Island, is arguably prettier and has beaches you can actually swim from. Many operators now sail into one of these two while still calling the trip 'Ha Long', which is a good thing rather than a bait-and-switch — ask which water your boat actually goes to before you book.

October to December gives the clearest air and the calmest sea, and is the best photography window. March and April are mild but often hazy. Summer is hot and good for swimming but carries a real risk of cancellation: the port authority suspends all sailings when a storm is forecast, and no operator overrides that.

The 'Surprise Cave' on Bo Hon Island, the largest and most visited cave in the bay. A steep flight of steps leads to two enormous chambers of stalactites lit theatrically in colour, with a viewing platform at the exit looking back over the anchorage.
A small island with a crescent of beach and a staircase of about 400 steps to a summit pavilion. The view from the top — karsts scattered to the horizon with boats threading between them — is the standard image of the bay.
The bay immediately north-east of Ha Long, sharing the same drowned karst landscape but licensed to far fewer boats. Itineraries here trade the famous caves for quiet anchorages, working fishing villages and water you can swim in without a queue.
A large cave on Dau Go Island named for the wooden stakes said to have been stored here before the 13th-century naval battle on the Bach Dang river. Three chambers, less crowded than Sung Sot and with a French-era inscription near the entrance.
