Nha Trang is Vietnam's original beach resort and still its most straightforward one. A six-kilometre crescent of sand runs the length of the city, backed by a palm promenade and a wall of hotels, in a bay sheltered enough that the water is usually calm and the swimming is easy. If what you want is a beach with a city's worth of restaurants behind it, this is the most efficient version of that in the country.
The bay is scattered with islands, and the reef around Hon Mun is a protected marine area that gives the south-central coast its best diving and snorkelling. Visibility is at its best between roughly February and September. The islands are also where the boat trips go, in a range from quiet snorkelling charters to loud all-day party boats — a distinction worth confirming before you book.
Behind the beach there is more history than the resort strip suggests. The Po Nagar Cham towers, built between the 8th and 11th centuries on a hill above the river mouth, are still an active place of worship and are the best-preserved Cham site outside My Son. The mineral mud baths on the city's outskirts are a genuine local institution rather than a tourist invention. And Nha Trang is the coastal end of the mountain road up to Da Lat, which makes it a natural pairing rather than a dead end.

Nha Trang has a longer dry season than most of Vietnam, running roughly January to August, with hot, bright days at 26-33°C (79-91°F) and calm water. The rain arrives in October and runs to December, when the sea is rough, visibility for diving collapses and boat trips are frequently cancelled.

A Cham Hindu temple complex on a hill above the Cai river mouth, built between the 8th and 11th centuries and dedicated to the goddess Yan Po Nagar. Four brick towers survive, the tallest around 23 metres, and the site remains in active religious use.
A small island in the bay ringed by Vietnam's first designated marine protected area, with the best coral and fish life on this coast. Dive schools and snorkelling boats run here daily from the city harbour, and visibility is at its best from February to September.
A 19th-century Buddhist temple at the foot of a hill in the city, with a mosaic dragon entrance and a flight of about 150 steps climbing past a reclining Buddha to a large white seated Buddha at the top, visible from much of Nha Trang.
Three linked pools and waterfalls in a boulder-filled gorge about 25 kilometres north of the city, reached by a scramble upstream over rock. The upper pool is the deepest and the quietest, and getting there is genuinely a climb rather than a walk.
