A pine-forested hill town at 1,500 metres, built by the French as an escape from the heat and still the coolest city in Vietnam.
Da Lat sits on a plateau in the Central Highlands at around 1,500 metres, and its entire existence is a response to temperature. The French laid it out from 1907 as a hill station where colonial administrators could escape the coastal heat, and the legacy is a town of pine woods, villas, a lake and an art-deco railway station that looks like it belongs in the Alps.
The climate is the product. Daytime temperatures sit in the high teens and low twenties Celsius year-round, which is why the surrounding plateau grows what nowhere else in Vietnam can — strawberries, artichokes, coffee, and flowers on an industrial scale, in greenhouses that now cover a startling proportion of the valleys. It is also why Da Lat is the domestic honeymoon capital, with all the heart-shaped photo installations that implies.
Underneath the kitsch is a genuinely good outdoor destination. Langbiang, the twin-peaked mountain that dominates the skyline, is a walk or a jeep ride. Canyoning on the waterfalls south of town — abseiling down rock faces into pools — is the best adventure activity in the country, and also the one that most demands a properly certified operator. The coffee grown on this plateau is Vietnam's best, and it is worth spending a morning drinking it where it is roasted.

Da Lat is cool all year, typically 15-24°C (59-75°F) by day and dropping to 10°C (50°F) or below at night in winter. The dry season from December to March gives clear mornings and is the best window. The wet season brings heavy, predictable afternoon rain that shuts down canyoning and outdoor plans.
What to pack
A jacket and long trousers, genuinely — Da Lat catches visitors out. Mornings and evenings are cold by Vietnamese standards and few buildings are heated.

The twin-peaked massif north of the city, rising to over 2,100 metres and central to the origin story of the local K'Ho people. A jeep track climbs to the lower viewpoint at around 1,950 metres; the higher summit is a proper two- to three-hour walk through pine forest.
An art-deco station completed in 1938, with three steep roofs echoing the peaks of Langbiang and original stained glass in the booking hall. A short heritage line still runs tourist trains 7km out to Trai Mat and the mosaic-covered Linh Phuoc Pagoda.
The crescent-shaped artificial lake at the centre of town, created in 1919 by damming a stream, with a walking and cycling loop of about five kilometres around it and the flower gardens, golf course and market on its shores.
A waterfall in a forested gorge a few kilometres south of the city, reached by an alpine coaster or a walking path, and the site of most of Da Lat's commercial canyoning. The upper falls are the tourist attraction; the lower system is where the abseiling happens.
A large municipal garden on the north shore of Xuan Huong Lake, planted with hydrangeas, orchids, roses and the temperate species that grow nowhere else in Vietnam. It is the public face of an industry that fills the surrounding valleys with greenhouses.
